The waterbox quenching system is installed at the finishing end
of a hot rod or bar rolling mill prior to the cut to length flying
shear to provide in-line heat treatment of the finished product.
The process allows the economical production of rods and bars
of higher quality and higher tensile strength whilst avoiding
the need to use steels with expensive high alloy compositions to
achieve the same physical properties. The process uses the residual
heat of the hot rolling process with suitably controlled water quenching
to harden and temper the product in-line thus optimising the
rolling mill's production capacity and energy efficiency to
produce high quality, high tensile rod and bar.
